Scholarship Halls

These new scholarship halls were designed to blend seamlessly into a historic neighborhood that surrounds the University of Kansas.

As part of the scholarship hall experience, all students are required to help prepare meals in the full-service kitchen on site. The living room, which is adjacent to the main entrance, was designed with the elements of a private residence—integrating a fireplace with stone hearth, natural light and plentiful seating for residents and visitors. Historic artifacts from a previously razed building on the university campus have been incorporated into the design. Ironwork railing was used on the hall’s exterior, and recovered spindles and a pendant light fixture adorn the primary stair.

The halls incorporate many LEED design principles including a geothermal mechanical system that uses the earth's relatively constant temperature to provide heating and cooling for the building. Natural daylight was maximized as a major design element throughout all private and public spaces.

Krehbiel Hall was awarded the Grand Prize in College Planning & Management’s 2009 Education Design Showcase. It was named Outstanding Project in American School & University’s Educational Interiors Showcase in 2009. Rieger Scholarship Hall won a 2006 Outstanding Architecture and Design in Education award from College Planning and Management’s Education Design Showcase and was also named Outstanding Project in American School & University’s Educational Interiors Showcase in 2006.
