KU School of Pharmacy
University of KansasNew Teaching and Administration Building
The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy’s 112,000 square foot new Teaching and Administration Building is designed with two 175-seat classrooms and several smaller classrooms with state-of-the-art distance learning technology for an interactive instructional environment, connecting instructors and students with remote locations and allowing future access to recorded class content. An integrated teaching laboratory, a medicinal biochemistry laboratory, a working model pharmacy, as well as simulated patient consultation rooms equipped with audio-video observation and instructional capabilities round out this facility designed for modern curriculum and future adaptations, and allow students to gain valuable practical experience.
The program called for a facility suitable for a six year doctorate degree program and continuing education for practicing professionals. Integrated technology, community spaces, and amenities accommodating the daily needs of students, student organizations, faculty and visitors were important goals for this project, including a dining facility and FEMA shelter serving the entire KU West Campus. Open break-out areas, a quiet resource center, private meeting rooms and modern lounge areas, with furnishings integrating comfort and technology, give students a range of choices to accommodate their study habits.
This was a fast paced CM-at-Risk project with an energy goal of ASHRAE 90.1 +30%. Located on the KU West Campus, the Pharmacy Teaching and Administration Building has been placed to easily accommodate phased future research laboratory and support functions totaling more than 300,000 sq ft. Treanor Architects has been involved with this project since 2005, assisting the School of Pharmacy with master planning and programming for their future needs.
