MU Schweitzer Hall
University of Missouri-ColumbiaExpansion and Renovation
The expansion and renovation of Schweitzer Hall fulfilled the University’s commitment to enhance research and instruction in the University of Missouri Medical and Life Sciences. The renovation and addition allowed critically needed laboratory space to be vacated, and through the consolidation of the faculty, enhances the productivity of the University of Missouri - Columbia Department of Biochemistry.
The new structure needed to conform to the specific institutional requirements for compatibility with decades-old limestone campus, and provide maximal square footage for new state-of-the-art biochemistry laboratories and a facility for an 800 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer serving the entire University of Missouri System.
The addition of three stories and mechanical penthouse were designed to provide flexible laboratory space on three floors. A second story enclosed bridge connects the addition to an adjacent biochemistry occupied building while spanning a required student pedestrian pathway below. The addition reflects the image of the surrounding Collegiate Gothic White Campus buildings with sloped slate roofing and mixtures of coursed ashlar limestone and cut limestone.
