Lawrence Carnegie Library Rehabilitation

Lawrence

Historic Building Rehabilitation

Treanor Architects was hired in 2000 to complete a three-phase rehabilitation of the Lawrence Carnegie Library. The building was originally constructed in 1904, with an addition in 1937 and was listed on the National Register in 1975.

The first phase included a condition assessment, life safety code compliance analysis and future use study. The second phase consisted of a stabilization project to correct deferred maintenance issues and secure the building until future users were identified. This phase included: window, exterior door, and roof replacement; masonry repointing and cleaning; MEP upgrades; and fire sprinkler installation. Treanor also provided consulting services that allowed the project to be awarded tax credits through the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office.

The third phase of this project consisted of complete interior renovation of the 10,000 sq. ft. existing building and a 2,000 sq. ft. addition. Construction was completed in early January 2011. The building currently houses offices, as well as exhibition and event spaces available for rent and suitable for a range of activities from wedding receptions to exercise classes.

The Lawrence Carnegie Library rehabilitation project was recognized by the Kansas Preservation Alliance with the Medallion Award during the 2011 Awards for Excellence program.
