Lawrence, KansasRehabilitation Converts Historic Post Office to High-tech Media Offices
The rehabilitation of the historic Lawrence Post Office, now called "The News Center,"Â was part of an overall campus master plan for the World Company, the parent company of the Lawrence Journal-World newspaper, Sunflower Broadband, and Channel 6 News. The building, constructed in 1906 as the city's first federal building, served as the post office until 1965, after which it was used by the State of Kansas and University of Kansas. Postal LLC purchased the building in 1999. The rehabilitation project, completed in 2001, included overall rehabilitation, a sympathetic addition to the north side, and a connector to the adjacent Journal-World plant.
In 2004, the rehabilitation received an Award for Excellence from the Kansas Preservation Alliance.
