Downtown Norton in This Place Matters Community Challenge
The Downtown Norton Historic District was recently named one of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s finalists to participate in the This Place Matters 2011 Community Challenge – a competition for a $25,000 grant.
Comprised of 43 contributing structures, the Norton Downtown Historic District encompasses commercial, industrial and civic areas in Norton, Kansas. The Norton County Community Foundation and building owners nominated the district for the challenge to assist in their effort to protect and revive Norton’s historic downtown.
Now that the Norton Downtown Historic District has been selected one of the 100 finalists, it will have to compete for online votes to win the grant. Voting runs from June 1-30, 2011, and each person can cast their one time for one group throughout the challenge.
Watch the National Trust’s This Place Matters page for the voting link.
Moulton’s Drugstore, owned by the Norton County Community Foundation, is at the heart of the Norton Downtown Historic District. Treanor Architects prepared design documents to restore the building to its 1950s appearance.
